They have a firm yet smooth texture – distinct from soft or oil pastels – that glides effortlessly without crumbling, providing excellent coverage and easy blending. Versatile in application, they can be used on paper, card, toned paper, canvas, and wood, and work beautifully over ink, acrylic, and watercolour – with no fixative required.
Use the edges for fine lines, the flat sides for broad strokes, or the corners for details. Colours can be layered, blended with turpentine, scraped back using sgraffito, or burnished to a glossy finish.
